Becoming a Partner Family


Dear Friend,

Thank you for your interest in buying a home through Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County (“HFHSC”). HFHSC works in partnership with God and people everywhere. Our goal as a non- profit ministry is to provide economically disadvantaged families with the opportunity to buy decent, affordable housing.

HFHSC looks at three distinct areas of selection criteria when reviewing potential “homeowner partners”. They are need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner.

Because HFHSC receives funding in two areas, government and personnal donations. We have partnered within Sarpy County with key government funding entities which allows us to purchase land for our home buyers. Our other form of monetary income is from donations, either labor, cash, materials and/or services to build afforadable homes for Habitat families. Other partnerships including government partnerships aere faith based communities, businesses, organizations, foundations and/or individuals. All partnerships provide funding to build houses. An estimated fifteen hundred volunteer hours provide the labor for each home. The mortgage payments of our homeowner partners go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Sweat Equity

Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor – “sweat equity” – into building their homes and the homes of others. Selected homeowners are required to contribute 250-350 hours of sweat equity-time to HFHSC projects.

Sweat equity reduces the monetary cost of a house and increases the personal stake of each family member in their new home. Such individual contributions bring a sense of dignity and self-worth in the recognition that the home is neither a handout nor a gift; rather, it has been acquired by each individual’s own hard work, with the help of a team of caring friends. The sense of empowerment that results from this simple acknowledgement of the individual dignity of each person is one of HFHSC’s greatest strengths.
